The University of California has a dual-track system of authority and responsibility. The Standing Orders of the Regents vests the Academic Senate, a legislative body, with plenary authority over curriculum, admissions and academic assessment and responsibility to chart the University's educational course, while the administration is responsible to chart the financial and operational course. In practice, these two domains overlap and are interdependent. To function successfully, faculty and administrators depend on a high level of consultation, trust, mutual respect and collegial collaboration. The Academic Senate has 22 standing committees of UCSC faculty members that meet regularly in addition to quarterly meetings of the Senate as a whole. The Academic Senate Office provides direct analytical and administrative support for the Senate Committees, Leadership and Division.
