The UCSF Program on Reproductive Health (PRHE) and the Environment & Health Initiative (EHI) is seeking a seasoned, creative and dynamic leader to serve as its Associate Director of Science & Policy. A member of the leadership team, the Associate Director will tackle an ambitious agenda at one of the nation’s most impactful mission-centric university programs to create healthier environments for all through scientific inquiry, science-informed clinical care and public policy.
PRHE is known for cutting-edge research, scientific integrity, creative policy and clinical solutions to environmental and public health problems, and dedication to health equity and justice. PRHE and EHI comprise more than 30 affiliated faculty, postdoctoral fellows, clinicians, and staff, and a highly successful research, science and policy program. We implement a multi-pronged strategy to transform environmental science into improved health by:
1.conducting rigorous science; 2.bringing the science to decision-makers through briefings and communications; 3.developing and scaling innovative, evidence-based tools to make prevention-focused decisionsin clinical and policy arenas; and 4.partnering with scientists and health professional leaders in promoting better policy.
This work is essential for equitable science-based decisions across all environmental health issues, including air pollution, toxic chemicals, building materials, and many others.
Our program is housed at UCSF, one of the most prestigious medical centers in the US, ranked in the top 5 universities in the country for education, research and patient care. PRHE has grown substantially over the last 2 years and the new Associate Director of Science & Policy will work in partnership with the Director, collaborate with an accomplished leadership team, and engage across the organization to deliver on PRHE’s mission and vision for its future, help craft its strategy for continued impact to improve health, and to engage across PRHE, within UCSF, and nationally and internationally to advance PRHE’s goals. The new Associate Director of Science & Policy will oversee PRHE’s work to develop new strategies around the use of science in decision making and improve clinical practice and policy.
About the Position: The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced and collaborative leader, expert in environmental health related science and science policy, science translation, and a proven program builder and fundraiser with a commitment to PRHE’s mission and to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Science-based background with a Master’s level degree (required) in environmental health sciences, public health, occupational health, epidemiology, toxicology, or other related field.
Public policy experience or equivalent; such as the Toxic Substances Control Act.
Strong communicator and ability to work well with others.
Hardworking and determined.
PhD in environmental health sciences, public health, occupational health, epidemiology,toxicology, or other related field.
High level skills of this position include:
In-depth knowledge of public policy as it relates to chemicals, fossil fuels, climate, and federaland state policy such as the Toxics Substance Control Act
Experience in science translation, and dissemination and communication of this information to awide range of audiences across clinicians, policy makers, academics, and the general public
Leading a team of staff and collaborators, with a variety of experience and science and policyexpertise.
Leveraging funding and support from individual donors, foundations, and grants to advance thescience and policy work.
