Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Program in Human Sexuality, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is seeking a Research Community Engagement Interviewer/Recruiter for support of a 5-year federal NIH RO1 grant focused on investigating factors that may contribute to increased risk of developing chronic sexual pain among circumcised Somali American women living in Minnesota. The overall goal is to gather information to help mental health and medical providers provide culturally-sensitive and empirically- informed healthcare.
The Research Community Engagement Interviewer /Recruiter will provide overall input into the cross-cultural aspects of the study, collaborate closely with major community partners and other study staff to recruit and interview participants and conduct data collection. The Community Engagement Interviewer/Recruiter is responsible for helping the study coordinator develop and maintain strong and regular communication with and between, the multidisciplinary team and community partners. The Community Engagement Interviewer Recruiter is also responsible for working with the community partner(s) to maintain the cross cultural integrity of all aspects of the study.
(30%) Work with community partner(s), research investigators, and staff to implement the study including:
The translation and refinement/development of the qualitative interview using the cross-cultural equivalence process.
Identify, recruit, and manage Community Advisory Board.
Refine and translate quantitative questions into Somali, record the questions in Somali and English for the audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI).
Provide educational lectures on topics identified to be of interest to Somali American women in informational study recruitment meetings.
Provide cross-cultural expertise in the data analysis and interpretation of findings.
Train and work collaboratively with the other Research Community Engagement Interviewer/Recruiter.
(35%) Recruit and conduct qualitative interviews with 30-40 Somali women and mothers/female caretakers.
(35%) Develop and implement an effective strategy for participant recruitment in the medical clinics and community and lead the collection of the quantitative data via ACASI interviews.

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 4 years in a human sexuality, psychology, social science or health- related area (Human Sexuality, Psychology, Marriage/Family Studies, Nursing, Medicine, Sociology, Anthropology, Social work, Public Health, social science or related field).
Extensive (minimum of 4 years) knowledge of and experience with the Somali culture and the Somali-American community in MN.
Fluent in Somali with excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Somali and English.
Comfort with and knowledge about sexual health.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
Interviewing experience and skill eliciting information on sensitive and personal topics in the Somali American or Somali community (such as female circumcision and sexuality).
A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
Knowledge and experience in conducting community engagement activities in an institutional or nonprofit setting.
Experience working independently and as part of a diverse team, and in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships across cultural differences.
Demonstrated facilitation skills with the ability to successfully elicit, capture, and reflect the input and feedback from diverse communities and stakeholder groups.
Work style that is self-motivated, adaptive, and that includes the ability to fulfill a variety of functions in a team environment without direct supervision.
Interest in working in a highly collaborative setting as part of a diverse team.
