The UC Davis Children's Hospital Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Nursery is a tertiary and quaternary care treatment unit specializing in the care of high-risk infants, including those born prematurely and very prematurely, from 23 to 37 weeks gestation. The nursery also cares for infants born with congenital defects as well as birth related conditions; including congenital heart defects, gastroschisis, myelomeningocele (spina bifida), metabolic disorders and persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, as well as birth related conditions such as jaundice, birth asphyxia, sepsis, pneumonia, perinatal depression and intraventricular hemorrhage.

Responsibilities This role will provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis and oversee other nurse practitioners. This includes managing scheduling, time off requests and organizational oversight of the work unit to ensure the competence and qualifications of direct reports. Management of the NP team will be a collaborative effort with the NP manager with contribution and recommendations for hiring, on-boarding and counseling. NP's are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.
Acts as an expert resource person for health care providers, orients/precepts new nurse practitioners (NP's) to role responsibilities of the service, establishes standardized procedures and protocols for NP practice, conducts research and teaching programs. Assists in establishing educational opportunities for nurse practitioners. Acts as a liaison for NP supported services and PCS Director of Advanced Practice. Provides practice supervision for all NP II FTE assigned. Acts in the absence of the program manager. Provides support for the NP direct reports.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
At least 3 years of recent NP experience in a level 3 or level 4 NICU.
Possession of valid California RN and Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner license.
DEA within 3 months of hire.
Graduation with a master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
National board certification if an NP, in an aligned specialty (eg if mental health must have Psychiatric specialty national board certification).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients.
Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role.
Current BLS and CPR and all certifications required for area of work.
NRP/PALS (within 3 months of hire).
One year or greater experience as a nurse leader.
Clinical experience in an academic medical center.
Ability to work flexible hours
Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider
