The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Davis Health located in Sacramento, California, seeks to hire a full time Associate Project Scientist in the Division of Trauma Surgery. The Division of Trauma Surgery functions as a level 1 Trauma Center and cares for the vast majority of victims admitted to the medical center and it coordinates the care of surgical subspecialists in addition to providing primary injury management.
The selected candidate will contribute to the advancement of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of traumatic injury, critical care, inflammation after severe illness, coagulation and endothelial biology, and artificial intelligence. Expected responsibilities include: performing ex-vivo coagulation and platelet assays, experience with ELISA and Western blot techniques, platelet isolation techniques, cellular flow cytometry; develop and maintain research databases for studies; supervising students and technicians regarding technical aspects of the research; laboratory finance and training, assist in writing grant proposals and preparing reports for funding agencies, determining research goals, and publishing research in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with Principal Investigator. The Associate Project Scientist should have experience in independent design and conduct of experiments.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 1) RESEARCH (90%) Research activity (50%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of trauma, trauma brain injury and hospital based violence intervention programs. The Associate Project Scientist helps to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. He/she will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques such as, developing and maintaining a clinical and/or research database for clinical studies. He/she will supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments. Within the lab, he/she will oversee matters of animal husbandry, laboratory finance and purchasing, and laboratory personnel training and health requirements, under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
The Associate Project Scientist will publish research in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with the Pl and possibly with other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition (20%)
The Associate Project Scientist will assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. He/she will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
2) PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)
The Associate Project Scientist will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific fields of inflammation, traumatology, critical care medicine and vascular physiology, and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. He/she will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.
When appropriate, the Associate Project Scientist may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
Basic Qualifications: Qualified candidates must possess a PhD degree in Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology or a closely related field, and be able to demonstrate a minimum of five years of research experience. All candidates must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.
Preferred qualifications include experience in domains of research including thrombosis and inflammation.
Salary and level of appointment will be based upon experience and qualifications.
