Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Geology & Geophysics Department. This is a regular (one year), full-time, exempt position, with possibility of a one year extension and is eligible for full benefits.

The successful candidate must be an earth scientist interested in exploring and applying a variety of remote-sensing techniques (e.g., satellite, aerial, multispectral, thermal) to assess composition and change of coastal and marine environments over a variety of spatial and temporal scales.

While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the Postdoctoral Investigator will have the opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of WHOI and US Geological Survey (USGS) researchers, and a strong operational team (USGS Aerial Imaging and Mapping). The individual would be directly complementary to, and work closely with coastal geologists, geographers, ecologists, oceanographers, engineers and technologists investigating the evolution of barrier islands, wetlands, estuaries and other coastal environments. The individual should have familiarity with a broad range of remote-sensing data to pursue science questions enabled by newly developed data-acquisition capabilities (e.g., UAS, AUV), as well as synthesizing existing datasets.

• Applicants must have a PhD in Geosciences or related Earth Sciences degree.
• Preference will be given to an applicant who has direct experience in using drones, GIS, and machine learning to quantitatively evaluate changes in the ecological condition of fluvial, lacustrine and/or coastal environments.

Fieldwork (including small boat operations) in remote areas may be required

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs. independently and carry 10-25 lbs. Visual abilities to include depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions. Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic/fine grasping and manipulation, repetitive motion, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others. Physical duties are subject to change.
