The Department of Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has openings for multiple remote-work friendly Research Associate positions in biomedical data science. The Research Associate candidate will devote primary effort to data science research and education focusing on genomics, cancer or pain. These positions are supported by three grants:
The A2CPS Project - a large-scale study of the transition from acute to chronic pain that will collect data from 3,600 people who have recently had surgery and track them for a 6-month period. The goal is to develop a set of biomarkers, or "signatures", that can predict whether a person will transition to chronic pain or be resilient. These signatures use measurements, including those from a patient's genetics, genomics, inflammation, metabolic pathways, brain structure, and brain function. The candidate will be in charge of working with the longitudinal omics data collected during the study, including exRNA, genetic variants, proteomic, lipidomic, and metabolomic data. This includes creating pipelines and workflows, evaluating data quality, creating training materials, analyzing data, and interacting with partner sites.
The AnVIL Training Network which focuses on developing genomic training material for data scientists to use the NHGRI's new cloud computing platform: https://anvilproject.org/. The candidate will be in charge of developing new training material, creating genomic data science workflows and pipelines for sharing with the community, and collaborating with partner institutions and the Genomic Data Science Community Network (http://www.gdscn.org/) to ensure access to data science training across institutions ranging from large R1 centers to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Community Colleges.
The ITCR Training Network - which focuses on developing data science training material focused on the ITCR program (https://itcr.cancer.gov/) tools and technologies. The candidate will be focused on the development of scalable training materials focused on cancer data science and working with partner institutions to deliver these training materials to researchers around the US. The candidate will also work with the ITCR Train the Trainers program to ensure that training is accessible to faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Community Colleges.
The candidates will report to the PIs of the respective projects and are not responsible for the direct supervision of staff. There is significant opportunity for cross-project work to ensure a rich professional experience for the Research Associates.
Master's degree or higher
Experience in practicing data science across scientific or practical domains
Excellent communication skills: written, verbal, interpersonal and teaching
Proven ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and adhere to deadlines
Strong organizational skills with an attention to detail
Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and respond quickly, creatively, and flexibly
Strong programming skills and a willingness to build on them with new technology
Experience with the R (required) and Python (recommended) programming languages
Experience writing and sharing open-source code using version control (GitHub), cloud-based document sharing (web pages, GitHub, Google Drive, Slack, DropBox, Confluence), and project management tools
Ability to assist with writing grant applications and work with potential funders
