Berkeley Lab's Nuclear Science Division (NS) has an opening for a Heavy Elements Postdoctoral Fellow to join their Heavy Element Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group!
In this role, you will conduct research exploring the chemical properties of the heaviest elements. This is a unique interdisciplinary project where you will perform gas-phase chemistry on radioactive isotopes of heavy elements produced in one-atom-at-a-time nuclear reactions. These atoms will be produced in nuclear reactions utilizing the 88-inch cyclotron and all chemical measurements will be performed utilizing the Berkeley Gas Filled Separator (BGS) and For the Investigation of Nuclide A (FIONA) devices
What You Will Do:
Perform measurements of gas phase Heavy element chemistry reactions utilizing the BGS and FIONA setup at the 88-inch cyclotron facility.
Develop data analysis tools and algorithms; perform analysis of experimental data heavy element experiments.
Comfortable working with different detector types such as silicon and germanium detectors.
Comfortable working with vacuum systems.
Participate in all BGS heavy element experiments at the 88-Inch Cyclotron.
Report results to supervisor.
Conduct original research independently and in collaborations.
Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.
Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of own work.
What Is Required:
Ph.D. in Nuclear Chemistry/Physics/Engineering or related discipline within the last five years.
Demonstrated experience with chemical reactions/heavy element chemistry.
Demonstrated experience with nuclear decay spectroscopy and/or nuclear reactions.
Demonstrated ability to perform research individually and as part of a research group.
Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results.

This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
