The School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking qualified applicants for a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track position as Director, Great Plains Veterinary Education Center in Clay Center, NE. This position is 50% director/administrative and 50% program leader in Nebraska Extension.
The livestock sector in Nebraska is a major driver of our state's economy. The UNL Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources is committed to advancing the success of the livestock sector in Nebraska. The Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center (GPVEC) is expected to advance animal health initiatives to enhance the capacity, practice, and overall well-being of animal health providers across Nebraska and the High Plains region by employing a One—Health approach. Expected outcomes include: 1) establishing GPVEC as the leader in food animal/livestock health and well-being educational/training for animal health students, professionals and stakeholders interested in integrated livestock production and health, 2) the development and delivery of contemporary, high quality educational programs, research and extension initiatives that address critical emerging animal health and well-being issues, and 3) robust and opportunistic connections with the animal health sector in Nebraska. The director will lead the Center and contribute to the integrated service, extension, research, and teaching land-grant mission of the Center, the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and the IANR.
The director will promote excellence in all facets of the GPVEC:
Synthesize and implement a strategic vision for the Center in the context of the IANR Communities (https://ianrcommunities.unl.edu/) and with input from stakeholders, faculty and staff. This vision should prioritize integrated research, extension and teaching opportunities, resourcing initiatives (including personnel, financial, partnerships and collaboration), and accountability to SVMBS and IANR priorities that encompasses all facets of the Center. Implementation includes strategic deployment of personnel and financial resources and continuous examination for relevancy. This strategic vision should be refreshed as needed.
Maintain and foster an inclusive culture within the Center in which all contributions to the team are appreciated and recognized, collaboration and innovation are encouraged, and the abilities of all are engaged to fully realize the potential of the team, and of each team member. Ensure opportunities are open to all, programs are inclusive of all constituencies, and efforts are made to engage diverse audiences, including those that are traditionally underrepresented. Ensure all programs of the department/Center are administered in accordance with the University's Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity programs.
Develop, deploy and promote uniquely valuable teaching, research and extension programs and opportunities as a Center of Excellence for the IANR, that clearly delineate the Center from other land grant institutions and/or other UNL programs.
Manage financial and physical resources responsibly to maximize effectiveness, exhibit fiscal discipline and transparency, and utilize best fiscal management practices.
Foster linkages with internal and external groups to strengthen ties with commodity organizations, private companies, state, federal, and local agencies, and Nebraskans. Serve as IANR's liaison with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture Animal Health Division and APHIS. The USDA ARS' Meat Animal Research Center (US MARC) in Clay Center is a critical affinity partner and should be regularly consulted to ensure alignment of priorities, resources and requirements.
Communicate with transparency and clarity to faculty, staff, students and stakeholders.
Engage in professional development to continually hone skills to effectively lead and manage Center operations and initiatives, to assume a portion of the workload of the Center, and to advance the mission of the Center.
Extension Program Leader/Extension Specialist – Livestock Health and Well-being The Livestock Health and Well-being Program Leader is expected to establish strategic linkages with livestock health sector practitioners and allied industry leaders to identify critical emerging issues and opportunities. The Director will supervise DVM clinical service and extension professionals to engage practitioners as well as livestock producers in informational and educational programs. The Director will also engage and coordinate with the Nebraska Integrated Beef Systems Initiative-affiliated faculty. Critical to this role is collaboration with state and federal agencies to inform and leverage UNL resources. Key partners within IANR include the Extension Beef Systems Program Leader and the unit leaders of the departments of Animal Science, Agronomy and Horticulture, and Biological Systems Engineering, and the Director of the School of Natural Resources.
As a Livestock Health and Well-being Extension Specialist, and as determined in consultation with the SVMBS director, the incumbent will: develop high-impact, recognized extension programs (integrated with teaching and research whenever possible); seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with research groups, extension issue teams, and educational programming; connect with stakeholders, agency, and industry partners to strengthen programming; effectively obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for research, extension, and teaching activities; participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities; and, translate research-based information into learner-centered products delivered using contemporary extension pedagogy. This includes: creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and, mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
Administrative Relationships: The incumbent is responsible to the SVMBS Director for all administration, subject matter coordination, programming, teaching, operating budget, reporting, annual performance appraisal, and expenditure of professional travel funds. The Director of the SVMBS will conduct annual performance evaluations of the GPVEC faculty in consultation with the GPVEC Director.
The incumbent is expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school; knowledge of contemporary integrated livestock production management practices; graduate degree in a relevant field and/or Board certification in an AVMA-recognized Veterinary Specialty Organization and eligibility to obtain a Nebraska veterinary medical license within one year.
Experience in extension program development, delivery and scholarly outputs; research experience and scholarly outputs; veterinary teaching experience (clinical or didactic); clinical veterinary practice experience; board certification in an AVMA-Recognized Veterinary Specialty Organization.
