Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational PDE and Fast Algorithms
The Mathematics Department at the Courant institute has one open postdoctoral position as part of the Simons Collaboration on Hidden Symmetries and Fusion Energy (hiddensymmetries.princeton.edu). The goal of this collaboration is to develop a modern stellarator optimization code that can exploit the full power of petascale and exascale computing infrastructure. Stellarators are nonaxisymmetric magnetic confinement concepts considered among the most promising for commercial magnetic confinement fusion. The collaboration includes a mix of mathematicians, physicists, and computer scientists all working toward this goal.
This position is a full-time two-year position, an extension to three years may be possible pending available funding. The position comes with no required teaching, but the possibility exists for those interested. The postdoctoral associate will engage in mathematical and computational research under the supervision of Antoine Cerfon and Mike O'Neil, focusing mostly on fast solvers for the PDEs and integral equations arising in magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium calculations in stellarator-type geometries. The postdoc should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and will be expected to contribute to the Collaboration effort at Courant as well as in related meetings and workshops.
The position will be located in New York.
Ph.D. in Mathematics, Physics, or related area with a research background in one or more of the following areas: fast algorithms (fast multipole methods), numerical methods for integral equations, shape optimization. Familiarity with electromagnetics is a plus, but not required.
There will be several opportunities to travel and present research results.
