The primary function of the Competitive Sports Coordinator is to assist the Associate Director of University Recreation in carrying out a comprehensive program of recreational activities and services, specifically intramural sports and sports club programming. This includes program development, fiscal management, and supervision of personnel administering those programs.
1. Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate two Graduate Assistants for Competitive Sports, and student staff in the positions of program assistants, supervisors, and officials. Actively incorporate Departmental Vision, Mission, and Values into staff training and development. 2. Develop, promote and implement a comprehensive competitive sports program of team and individual intramural sports, and club sport organizations. This includes the coordination of registration procedures, scheduling leagues, tournaments, and special events. 3. Implement risk management procedures to include student travel and emergency action plans. Effectively train and empower students to respond appropriately to incidents. 4. Work collaboratively with other departmental and division staff to define facility needs and schedule appropriately. 5. Develop, interpret, review and enforce policies and procedures related to Intramural and Club Sport activities. 6. Communicate with teams and captains regarding policies and rules, disciplinary procedures and schedules. 7. Work with the Business Services Staff in developing and managing Competitive Sports program budgets payroll, spending, fee allocation procedures, and revenue from external programming. 8. Work with the Associate Director to create, implement and regularly review an ongoing 3-year plan for the Competitive Sports program. 9. Develop, interpret, review and enforce policies and procedures related to Intramural and Club Sport activities. Communicate with teams and captains regarding policies and rules, disciplinary procedures and schedules. 10. Work with the Associate Director to create, implement and regularly review an ongoing 3 year plan for the Competitive Sports program to incorporate Divisional priorities as they relate to the Student Affairs strategic plan and student learning priorities.
Master's Degree Preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community 2. Proficiency in written and oral communication skills and utilization of computers 3. Ability to foster a positive, cooperative work environment 4. Ability to plan, organize, and implement intramural programs and events 5. Ability to supervise and train student employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments 6. Employee development and performance management skills 7. Ability to work independently or as a member of a team 8. Ability to comply with all policies and regulations of Mississippi State University and enforce policies that apply to University Recreation programs and services
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Must be able to officiate any sport when necessary. Will be required to work outdoors despite inclement weather conditions when necessary
