Department/College Description CAD Tech provides technical support to the faculty, staff, and students in RIT's College of Art and Design, the creative hub where art, design, and technology intersect.
The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) is a university-based research center in the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) dedicated to supporting the preservation of cultural heritage collections in libraries, archives, and museums around the world.
Detailed Job Description The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) in the College of Art and Design (CAD) at RIT provides preservation technologies that inform and enhance professionals' abilities to preserve collections in libraries, archives, museums, and other collecting institutions. The Web Applications Developer is responsible for maintaining IPI's existing full-stack web applications and websites, currently comprised of three websites and three web applications. One of the web applications, eClimateNotebook, is a subscription-based software with both commercial and custom versions, more than 900 accounts, and over 3,000 users.
The position is also expected to engage with IPI research and consulting staff to translate research findings into new online tools and resources by providing software planning, design, and development expertise. The Web Applications Developer works closely with IPI's Web & Publications Manager on frontend aspects of development projects, and collaborates with IPI's Director of Operations on e-commerce software, customer service, and reporting needs. This position has a dual reporting structure, reporting to both IPI's Executive Director and CADTech's Senior Web Programmer.
Major responsibilities include: Web Applications Creation and Maintenance
Responsible for designing, coding and modifying web sites and applications, from layout to function according to client specifications.
Monitor and maintain the status and health of all web applications to ensure continuing operations.
Work with technical and customer support staff to address software issues that arise in interactions with customers.
Plan and execute releases of software changes or new development to minimize disruption to external stakeholders.
Determine and assess technical requirements, provide technical advice, recommend and implement technical solutions
Lead and attend meetings with IPI staff and external stakeholders to maintain awareness of customer needs, system use, performance, and requests for maintenance or new development.
Seek new development opportunities that advance IPI's mission, objectives, and operational effectiveness.
Analyze maintenance and development requirements for new projects, serve as principal investigator on projects as necessary, and form action plans to accomplish goals.
Lead collaborative meetings and communications with IPI and CADTech team members to strengthen integration and promote project ideas and awareness.
Web Development Team
Member of the college's Web Development Team.
Collaborate with CADTech developer(s) on college-wide applications, and share ideas, strategies, and methodologies.
When possible provides backup support to CADTech group.
When possible supports Web Development projects outside of IPI.
Required Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in computer science, information technology, information systems or related field or relevant experience.
EXPERIENCE: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of work experience, including full stack mobile and web application development, and a proven ability to assess an organizations software needs and implementation of solutions to meet needs. Candidates should possess, or demonstrate a willingness to develop, a basic understanding of the preservation activities supported by IPI technologies.
Proven background in full stack mobile and web application development
Proficient in PHP development and modern frameworks (e.g. Laravel, Symfony)
Proficient in relational database development (e.g. MySQL)
Linux server/CLI experience
Familiar with version control software (e.g. Git) and continuous integration System refactoring
Excellent technical troubleshooting skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to translate end-user requirements into effective system designs
Familiar with software testing and unit testing
Exposure to Python
Exposure to Apache2 or NGINX
Exposure to Drupal and Ubercart
Exposure to Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence)
Exposure to eCommerce solutions
Familiar with static site generators (e.g. Jekyll)
Creative, reliable, highly-motivated, hard-working, and resourceful
