The HIT-SI group in the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at the University of Washington is seeking qualified candidates for a new position to work on the development of novel “plasma drivers” for application to the development of economical magnetic confinement fusion energy. Dr. Hansen’s lab provides a dynamic, hands-on environment researching the application of inductive helicity injection as a means to maintain high-temperature plasmas to enable economical fusion energy. Members have the opportunity to participate in every facet of the research process including, experimental operations, diagnostic development and application, and numerical modeling. Successful candidates will join a group of scientists with world leading expertise in helicity injection, plasma self-organization, and related topics to advance the goal of safe, abundant, and carbon-free electricity from fusion.
RESPONSIBILITIES: •Operation and data analysis of a spheromak based magnetic confinement experiment (HIT-SI3). •Design, operation, and/or maintenance of various plasma diagnostics such as Thomson scattering, other laser/optical diagnostics, and magnetic probe arrays. •Requires participation in the upgrade of the experiment to a new configuration (HIT-SIU) including: 1)assembly, testing, and commissioning of high voltage power systems, 2)assembly of upgraded machine components, and 3)recalibration of diagnostics added, moved, and/or modified as part of the upgrade.
REQUIREMENTS: •Master's Degree in engineering, plasma physics and magnetic confinement fusion energy and 3 to 5 years of job-related experience •Can possess and apply a comprehensive knowledge of a particular field of specialization to the completion of complex assignments; advances state-of-the-art research in field of specialization. •Successful candidates will require knowledge and experience in the following areas: - a developed understanding of magnetized plasmas, magnetic fusion energy, and/or spheromak magnetic confinement and - experimental plasma physics experience, including experience with operation and analysis of magnetized plasma devices and/or the design, installation, and operation of related diagnostic systems.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •PhD in plasma physics or a related field •Knowledge and/or experience in the following areas are also desired but not required: computational plasma physics experience applying magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) or other models to simulate magnetized plasmas; - experience with GPU or other high-speed feedback control systems; - experience with high speed puff valves, high vacuum systems, helicon plasma sources, and Thomson scattering; - an understanding or experience with “self-organized” magnetized plasmas, such as spheromaks and RFPs.
