Summary of Duties:
Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, this position will focus on diagnostics, virus elimination, and tissue culture. The incumbent will perform diagnostic laboratory assays to screen germplasm for pathogens of interest accurately and without cross-contamination, as well as conducting other types of assays as needed. They will analyze, record, and report all diagnostic results as per CPCNW SOPs. Furthermore, the incumbent will be responsible for the elimination of viruses infecting hop, grape, and fruit tree cultivars by heat therapy and/or other methods as required. This role includes propagation and maintenance of plants and progeny before and after virus elimination, and maintenance and monitoring of equipment, including incubators, lights, and water systems, needed for these processes. Finally, the incumbent will participate in the development, validation, and implementation of new diagnostic assays or virus elimination methods, as well as in the review of extant procedures, and will be expected to aid in the preparation of data for publication. Will work cooperatively with the managerial staff and other program personnel, communicating effectively to ensure the efficient operation of the program.
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
-Possess or have the ability to acquire and maintain a Washington state public pesticide applicator's license. -Possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license.
-Working knowledge of basic chemistry and mathematics including the ability to calculate solution concentrations, and basic data manipulation, and perform accurate dilutions of small volumes. -Experience in virus therapy of grapevines, hops, and pome and stone fruit trees and of plant maintenance under greenhouse, screenhouse and growth chamber conditions. -Experience in plant growth facility operation and maintenance and plant tissue culture.
