Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II ) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.
This facility is open to users from academia and industry and its operations are at a time when the world enters a new era with a global economy fueled largely by scientific discoveries and technological innovations. NSLS-II provides the research tools needed to foster new discoveries and create breakthroughs in critical areas such as energy security, environment, and human health.
The successful candidate will work on the development of monolithic 2D Multilayer Laue Lenses (MLL) nano-focusing structures for high-resolution x-ray microscopy. The work will involve microfabrication of Si templates to accommodate two independent linear optics in a pre-aligned configuration. Participation in postprocessing of the nano-focusing optics, laboratory, and synchrotron characterization of the developed structures will be required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Microfabrication of Si templates at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (or similar user facilities)
Comprehensive laboratory characterization of the developed 2D structures
Active involvement in post-processing of MLLs followed by synchrotron characterization
Close interaction with the scientific and engineering staff of NSLS-II and CFN
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's Degree in physics, engineering, materials science or related field and at least five years of related experience
Extensive knowledge of methods and techniques used for micro-fabrication of MEMS devices
Proven record of successful micro-fabrication of MEMS devices
Ability to work independently and with a diverse team of scientists and engineers
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
Ability to work flexible hours
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (one or more of the following):
Master's or higher level degree
Knowledge of x-ray nano-focusing optics and its application for high-resolution x-ray microscopy
Experience with a laboratory-based characterization of microfabricated devices (white light interferometry etc.)
Ability to analyze data, knowledge of Matlab, Mathematica etc.
Working knowledge of CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks, etc.)
Experience in synchrotron characterization of nano-focusing optics
The position is a three-year term appointment, subject to funding.
Candidates will be hired at the appropriate level commensurate with depth and breadth of experience.
