The Feeney Lab at UCSF (ZFGH campus) seeks a highly motivated Junior or Assistant Specialist to work as part of a research collaboration investigating the immune response to childhood malaria in Uganda. The successful candidate will contribute to hypothesis-driven research projects related to fetal and infant immune responses to perinatal pathogens (malaria, CMV, COVID) under close mentorship from the PI. The selected candidate will contribute to team-oriented lab work including flow cytometry experiments on cryopreserved cells, cell culture, PCR, and ELISA, as well as preparation/maintenance of lab reagents, culture media, and parasite lines, and other general lab management duties. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts for publication. In addition, they will have opportunities to undertake independent research projects. The selected candidate will be trained in relevant data analysis techniques. Required skills will include flow cytometry (basic familiarity), basic molecular techniques such as PCR and ELISA, cell culture, data management, and basic statistical analysis. Multi-parameter flow cytometry and/or mass cytometry (cyTOF) will be used for some experiments but prior training in these techniques is not required.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of biology or immunology, familiarity with flow cytometry experiments and analysis of the resulting data, and experience with basic cell culture techniques. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are essential. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong communication skills and an adaptable personality, and an ability to work well within a team.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
