Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Harvard Business School is seeking a half-time Research Associate for one year or more, beginning spring 2021.The Research Associate (RA) will assist with the daily operations of research projects for a faculty member in the Technology and Operations Management unit. The research will focus on environmental regulations as they relate to business and transparency, as well as climate research. The RA will assist with digital content, researching organizations to profile for podcasts and/or cases, and assist in conducting interviews.
The RA position reports directly to faculty supervisor and administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. The ideal RA candidate will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to use discretionary judgment.
Primary duties: Under the general direction of faculty member, the RA will develop, design and conduct research projects; pitch ideas, analyze, produce original written materials; contribute to scholarly research products including but not limited to journal articles, working papers, existing cases, and presentations.
Represent HBS to outside entities: Interview decision makers at companies around the world and work closely with company representatives on the case development and course development efforts (e.g., case supplements, rewrites, teaching notes, and multimedia products). Perform on-site field research, interviews (local, regional and international level).
Collect and manage research using a variety of tools and sources, including the use of podcasts and cases, in order to produce a narrative storytelling of results. Develop, synthesize, and provide analysis of research for academic journal articles, HBS cases and HBS teaching notes.
Independently manage all timelines and deliverables. Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies. Must be able to structure assignments and keep faculty member informed as necessary, using own judgment.
Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Complete work with only general direction. Be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.
Other duties as assigned.
This is a half-time term appointment starting as soon as possible (start date flexible) through June 30, 2022. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as one-year term appointments with potential for renewal. Half-time positions are benefits-eligible and can be paired to create a full-time role.

Bachelor's degree required. One to two years of relevant experience in consulting and/or industry is required.
Advanced project management experience preferred. Experience and/ or familiarity with the intersection of business and climate.
Evidence of outstanding academic achievement. Indication of training and good habits in research management and analysis. Proven ability to work independently and creatively. The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion.
The RA must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary.
