This position is a member of the College of Design’s IT team. The CDes IT team is an agile group of IT professionals working to support the students, faculty, and staff of the College through application development, academic technology, design-centric technology consulting/support, and continuous improvement of business processes.
In addition to working with the CDes IT team, the Developer will regularly interact with customers and stakeholders to define requirements, conduct quality assurance and user training, and troubleshoot issues.
The primary responsibility of the Developer is to design, develop, and maintain software applications for the College of Design. The Developer will primarily work as a backend web developer. The initial emphasis will be on replacing the College’s legacy client/server applications with web applications built using the Django framework. In addition, the Developer may work within low-code development environments, perform basic frontend development, and prepare data queries and reports for College leadership.

Software Development (60%):
Collaborate with multiple stakeholders from across the College to define software requirements
Design software to meet stakeholder, architectural, and information security/data privacy requirements
Write code, test code, and implement application designs
Integrate applications with other systems by implementing and consuming APIs
Extract data for use in applications and reports using SQL
Conduct end-user testing and quality assurance
Provide training on application use and documentation of code
Operations, administration, and support (30%):
Deploy, maintain, and upgrade in-house applications
Provide operational administration and support for application platforms (e.g. cloud, container, PaaS)
Troubleshoot application issues; ensure swift and accurate resolution
Continuous improvement, strategic planning, and professional development (10%):
Drive and support continuous improvement at the CDes IT team, College, and University levels
Contribute to the development and execution of strategic plans at the CDes IT team, College, and University levels
Attend training and professional conferences to upgrade and expand skills; read professional journals, industry publications, and relevant technical books
The salary range for the position is $68,000 to $75,000, depending on qualifications.
BA/BS degree required. Two years of work experience in the area of web development with a related BA/BS degree. Four years of work experience in the area of web development with a non-related BA/BS degree.
Experience with the following backend technologies:
Python, Ruby, or a comparable programming language
Familiarity with frontend technologies (HTML, CSS, JS)
Experience working directly with customers and/or stakeholders
Demonstrated commitment to customer service; strong interpersonal skills
Experience with some of the following:
Django or a comparable MVC-like web application framework
Microsoft SQL Server or a comparable database server
Microsoft SSIS or a comparable ETL solution
Low code development environment
Work experience with the University of Minnesota technology environment, or in other institutions of higher education.
