The Ashworth Lab at UCSF is seeking a Junior Specialist to work on an ongoing drug discovery project. The selected candidate will assist with ongoing experiments and conduct research under the guidance of Dr. Timmerman and members of the Ashworth Lab. The Specialist will learn and utilize a variety of research techniques and have the opportunity to be a co-author on publications. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a biomedical sciences PhD or MD.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Molecular biology assays including basic cloning, plasmid preparation, DNA extraction. • Recombinant protein expression and purification. • Mammalian tissue culture, drug studies using reporter gene assays, and fluorescent, luminescent, and colorimetric readouts. • Immune fluorescence analysis of fixed cells and tissue sections.
Required qualifications: • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot experiments. • Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and think critically about experiments. • Experience performing basic molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation and PCR. • Applicants need to be organized and self-motivated and enthusiastic about science and medicine. • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) at the time of hire. • Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with protein expression analysis and/or ELISA assays. • At least 1 year of experience in biochemistry and/or protein production. • At least 1 year of mammalian tissue culture experience. • Experience performing high-throughput drug screens.
