Founded in 1973 and is today the primary academic support unit for UC Berkeley.
Serves over 10,000 undergraduates annually, approximately 30% of the undergraduate student population.
Employs 20 professional staff with disciplinary expertise, 300+ trained undergraduate tutors, and 20 graduate student instructors.
Serves as the liaison between the Academic Senate and the DeCal program, a partnership that adds over 300 courses per year to Berkeley's curriculum.
Manages Berkeley's Summer Bridge Program, a rigorous six-week academic residential program for entering freshmen.
Working under the direction of the Associate Executive Director (AED), the incumbent coordinates the Undergraduate Course Facilitator Training and Resources (UCFTR) at the SLC. This includes being responsible for the daily operations of the program, delivering campus-mandated training to first-time student facilitators in the De-Cal program, and supervising a student staff of 2-4. Specifically, the incumbent will:
Under the guidance of AED, design and implement training materials to support De-Cal facilitators in meeting the campus-mandated training requirement;
Support De-Cal facilitators' pedagogical growth in a variety of formats, including workshops, one-on-one consultations, and drop-in service;
Train and supervise 2-4 peer staff on how to facilitate training material, conduct consultation services, and engage in program outreach;
Serve as liaison between student facilitators, department advisors, faculty, and the Academic Senate on matters related to De-Cal facilitation;
Keep abreast of any curricular or policy changes that may impact students' ability to facilitate a De-Cal;
Keep up-to-date the department contact list to guide prospective facilitators;
Cultivate connections with Academic Senate staff, student organizations, the De-Cal board, faculty, and advisors across campus to ensure program visibility;
Support and mentor students, including student staff, in achieving their academic goals;
Collaborate with SLC colleagues on committees/workgroups to support the administrative needs and overall mission of the Center;
Support fellow program coordinators with the student staff selection process and general event planning;
Serve on unit or division committees, as appointed.
Experience conducting group training or learning at the collegiate level;
Experience with peer teaching at the collegiate level;
Knowledge of sociocultural and affective issues impacting learning in higher education;
Knowledge of the structure, curricular, and cultural demands of the research university;
Experience working in a globally and culturally diverse learning environment;
Strong public speaking skills;
Strong written communication skills;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Demonstrated ability to learn and grow from feedback;
Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative, high-functioning, high-trust culture;
Proficient computer skills, including experience using the Google Suite and Microsoft
Office Suite and other social media platforms.
Bachelor's degree in education, educational psychology, learning sciences, or any academic discipline with facilitation experience and/or equivalent experience/ training.
MA degree in the learning sciences, educational psychology, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/ training.
Experience supporting learning-center work;
Experience teaching/working at a research university;
Experience in educational leadership.
