Dept Marketing Statement The incumbent will perform tasks in support of several projects related to metabolism and physiology of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, sea otters, and other pinniped species. Research tasks will include (but are not limited to): metabolic data collection using an open-flow respirometry system, heat flow data collection measurements, heart rate data collection measurements, morphometric measurements, venipuncture procedures and subsequent analysis of blood chemistries. Incumbent will be expected to manage and ensure the completion of all aspects of animal care and behavioral conditioning, facility maintenance, and volunteer staff management. Incumbent will also be expected to use SCUBA for the weekly maintenance and inspection of the animal habitats.
Under the general supervision of the Program Manager, the incumbent will perform a variety of administrative duties and general facility support. Individual will be responsible for management of other staff members including student volunteers in the absence of, or when instructed by, the Program Manager.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: Salary Range: $25.12 - $26.21/hour. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 60% - Animal training, husbandry, and research
Must be able to perform all animal and volunteer management tasks in the absence of the Program Manager.
Engage in research focusing on the animals in the Marine Mammal Physiology Project. Research tasks will include (but are not limited to): metabolic data collection using an open-flow respirometry system, heat flow measurements, heart rate measurements, and body mass measurements.
Report all health concerns to campus veterinarian and photo-document and upload to animal database.
Apply behavioral conditioning techniques for purposes of animal separations, mental and physical fitness, research behaviors, and implementation of novel behaviors.
20% - Administrative duties
Maintain animal records and personnel files.
Review and report quantities of animal consumables and laboratory supplies.
Maintain and update standard operating procedures manual and work manual.
Assist with legally-mandated paperwork and ensure adherence to regulations.
Interface with Seymour Marine Discovery Center to help with educational opportunities.
10% - Facilities support
Manage and guarantee completion of all facility sanitization and orderliness protocols.
Monitor and report inventory of supplies.
With the help of the facilities personnel, inspect and repair seawater pipes, fences, fiberglass posts, shade structures, animal habitats, and related life support systems.
10% - Supervision
Mentor staff and provide constructive feedback on their progress.
Make recommendations for improved staff cohesion, diversity, and inclusion.
Stay current with animal training methodologies and resources and pass those on to other staff members.
Minimum 15 years of experience with animal husbandry and behavioral conditioning techniques with exotic animal species.
Minimum of 4 years of experience working with the Marine Mammal Physiology Project at Long Marine Laboratory.
Demonstrated experience with open-flow respirometry, heart rate measurements, and heat flow.
Prior experience managing and directing other staff members (including volunteer staff) with regard to animal care and training in a research and educational setting.
Strong organizational skills, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgement, and discretion.
