This position ensures the successful operation of the college for all students at one state prison and is responsible for projects supporting all GPEP students, including organizing volunteer engagement while providing academic advising for a group of GPEP undergraduates. The candidate gets results in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment while balancing a significant workload.
Most of this position's responsibilities are operational, however a foundation in pedagogy is necessary for successful implementation as well as for effective tutor training and academic advising.
This position is based at Goucher's campus in located in Towson, Maryland but includes weekly on-site coordination and office hours at the prisons, located in Jessup, MD, two half-days or more each week. Work hours include several weekday evenings each week as well as occasional weekend hours. Though each day may feel different, the Site Director and Volunteer Manager will spend the majority of time focused on the following responsibilities:
Ensuring all class meetings, student sessions, study halls, college events, etc. at one of the two prisons GPEP operates in take place on time with all needed students, faculty, staff, and materials present. The SDVM should expect to invest significant time and capacity to ensuring the college operates smoothly and consistently and that persistent obstacles are overcome. This is a primary objective and significant responsibility of this role.
Managing the acquisition, inventory, clearance and distribution for course materials, with the goal of at least 70% obtained via donations. The SDVM typically manages this for GPEP students at one prison.
Coordinating site visits to both prisons for stakeholders, including funders, state and federal officials, administrators, and others, requiring complex organization to establish appropriate schedules, necessary approvals, and the participation of essential partners.
Ensuring excellent support of GPEP students by planning and supervising the engagement of 40-70 main campus students and other community members, who volunteer each semester in support of GPEP students' educations. This includes, but is not limited to:
Recruiting, screening, selecting, and providing ongoing support to:
Academic tutors who support Goucher students enrolled through GPEP;
Research assistants who help professors with the logistical details of providing a scholarly research experience within the prisons; and
Volunteers providing support in other roles as identified..
Managing all logistical aspects of volunteer engagement from coordinating schedules to daily correspondence
Utilizes existing, and when necessary, researches and creates new, curriculum for volunteers including:
Pedagogical trainings in best practices for tutors (3-4 sessions each semester); and
Trainings related to expectations and procedures within the prisons for all volunteers cleared to enter.
Serves as an academic advisor for a subset of Goucher students enrolled through GPEP.
Maintains updated records of students to receive academic accommodations. Ensures all appropriate materials and supports are acquired and made available to students with accommodations.
Additional projects as assigned.
Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor's degree (advanced degrees welcome) and have at least three years of professional experience. Strong project management, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and pedagogy to provide excellent academic advising are musts. This is not a teaching position, though candidates with experience with academic advising and college-level teaching are encouraged to apply.
Candidates should have proficiency using the Microsoft suite, Google Drive and Google Forms, at least two years of experience on a state-issued driver's license, reliable access to transportation, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. The successful candidate will be subject to a background check and driving records check as a condition of employment. The ability to obtain and maintain clearance at the prisons is a necessary condition of employment. The salary for this position is $56,000 per year and includes generous benefits.
