The Space Sciences Laboratory is an Organized Research Unit of the University of California at Berkeley. Its function is to build equipment and conduct research in all aspects of space science, including ground based equipment, earth orbit and interplanetary probes and instruments. The mechanical shop exists to assist in all aspects of this equipment prototyping, design and production using a variety of common and exotic materials. Principal Laboratory Mechanicians perform the most demanding of this work.
Involves engineering design and development of aerospace systems including scientific instruments for spacecraft and satellite command and control systems. Ensures the safe integration and testing of spacecraft to the launch vehicle and coordinates their operation in orbit. The specific purpose of this position is to manage the mechanical design, fabrication, testing and delivery of scientific instruments for spacecraft, sounding rockets, and balloons for NASA, NSF, and other US and foreign agencies. To manage spacecraft subsystems for larger missions or entire spacecraft for smaller missions, and to manage an aerospace machine shop.
Key Responsibilities include:
Implements and monitors NASA procedures, contract terms, guidelines and directives, including all quality assurance and safety requirements.
Works with Principal Investigator to develop NASA proposals and concepts.
Develops the design of spacecraft devices and oversees their fabrication, test and operation in space.
Oversees the development of the quality assurance implementation plan, subcontractor fabrication plans and facilities, parts and materials used in the project, inspections and test planning.
Supervises workflow and prioritization of machine shop jobs and directs implementation of quality assurance requirements.
Supervises trained staff and facilities.
Develops and manages spacecraft component subcontracts.
Develops complete work plan and budget; monitors cost and schedule performance.
Coordinates component and system-level design reviews.
Provides technical and financial reports to NASA, or Project Manager, or Principle Investigator.
Oversees subsystem managers for parts of the program.
Makes recommendations and implements decisions on issues (operational and budget processes, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning) that have department-wide impact.
Experience in the design and technical problems associated with spacecraft systems. Must have demonstrated skills in the management of engineering tasks and personnel, be capable of generating budgets and schedules for a major engineering activity, and be able to manage and maintain budgets and schedules developed by co-workers and subordinates.
Fifteen years of experience in the design of mechanical systems for space satellite programs and the general conduct of space satellite programs.
Eight or more years of experience in spacecraft development projects, in management and in engineering.
Demonstrated skill level to manage the technical design and development of a space project and to inspire and achieve high quality performance from subordinates and contractors.
Must have an understanding of the implementation of NASA procedures, guidelines, and directives, contract terms and conditions, including Mission Assurance requirements, safety requirements, and ensuring that instrument contract deliverables are met. Must be familiar with NASA testing requirements for flight qualification and experienced in the setup and use of required facilities.
Able to lead the subsystem definition, scope of work, and organizational structures to optimize the contributions of partner institutions.
Must have: proven ability for management of aerospace engineering activity, ability to conduct component and system level design reviews, and ability to conduct failure reviews and implement recovery plans.
Understanding of machine shop practices and NASA required material and process tracking.
Doctorate or advanced degree with significant post-graduate work in related field or equivalent experience and training
Extensive experience with 3D CAD modeling and simulation software
Desirable training: quality assurance, ESD control, clean room procedures, radioisotope safety procedures, elevated work platform, articulated boom lift, high lift truck, ammunition and explosives certification, SCAPE, probabilistic risk management.
Licenses or certifications:
