The Zehr Lab in the Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Project Scientist. Under the direction of Professor Jonathan Zehr, the scientist will create and apply novel bioinformatic tools and workflows for the analysis of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data from complex microbial marine ecosystems. Position duties include oversight of all aspects of multiple big data projects, including the development of workflows; assembling and annotating genomes of uncultivated marine nitrogen-fixing organisms; analyzing high density microarray data; and processing high throughput functional gene amplicon datasets. The scientist will take a leading role in analyzing, synthesizing, disseminating and publishing the resulting scientific findings.
Applicants with expertise in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply: experience developing novel strategies for assembling and annotating genomes from metagenomic datasets; experience developing bioinformatic tools to process and analyze microarray data; expertise in software development using languages including C, C++, Python, Perl, R;and/or knowledge of best practices for large software projects and development of efficient, maintainable code.
