Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) Computation Research Division is hiring for a Machine Learning for Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellow. This position will be responsible for research focused on developing machine learning approaches and data sets, and applying the methods to develop novel molecular systems for the extraction of carbon from the air and/or rare earth elements from solution. In addition, this position will contribute to the development and/or advancement of open-source software tools, primarily in Python. The successful candidate will a part of an integrated team of experimental and computational chemists/physicists and machine learning algorithms developers that will design and deliver novel approaches that will break new ground in utilizing machine learning to solve complex critical materials chemistry problems, and provide a foundation for algorithmic development by the broader scientific and engineering scientific community.
What You Will Do:
Contribute to the understanding and development of new ligand chemistry to extract carbon from the air and/or valuable rare earth elements.
Contribute to the development of new chemical and materials datasets for machine learning.
Contribute to the implementation of algorithms in open-source software machine learning frameworks.
As part of an interdisciplinary team, contribute to the design and execution of computational chemistry methods and machine learning approaches to solve relevant scientific problems.
Publish results in peer reviewed journals and conferences.
What is Required:
PhD degree in Quantum Chemistry, Physics, or a relevant field.
Strong fundamentals in computational chemistry methods for organics, transition metals or heavy elements.
Experience with machine learning and deep learning network development, particularly using TensorFlow and similar frameworks.
Strong programming skills in Python.
Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team contributing to an active intellectual environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Programming skills in C/C++ are highly desired.
This is a full-time 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
