Dept Marketing Statement The Seymour Marine Discovery Center (SMDC), founded in 2000, serves as the outreach and public education component of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz. The SMDC educates people of all ages about marine science research and ocean conservation. The Center consists of a 17,500-square-foot facility with additional outdoor features on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean located on the UC Santa Cruz Coastal Campus.
Assists in planning, organizing, and implementing events and functions, which may include symposiums, conferences, program events, banquets, and VIP briefings. May independently manage small, non-complex events.
Under the direct supervision of the Operations and Enagagement Officer, the Events Coordinator organizes and oversees all aspects of developing, planning, and implementing high-level fund raising and marketing events both at the Seymour Center and off-site locations. The Events Coordinator also provides support for all public events of the Center.
Under the general supervision of the Operations and Enagagement Officer, the Events Coordinator manages the facility rentals program. Duties include proactively marketing the Center's facilities to appropriate clients, reservations management, fee processing, ensuring that the Center's assets are protected during events, and coordinating maintenance.

Job Duties 60% - Facility Rentals Management
Under general supervision of the Operations and Enagagement Officer, manage the daily operations of an active events center. Duties include establishing working relationships with businesses, social event planners and vendors; maintaining policies and procedures unique to the rental and use of event facilities; communicate with potential clients; conduct pre-event tours; ensure all required event documentation is completed accurately and on time; manage reservation procedures and calendars; ensure all AV, furniture and event space are well-maintained.
20% - Fundraising and Marketing Events
Assists Operations and Enagagement Officer with planning and development of annual calendar of fundraising and marketing events. Coordinates and manages the implementation of fundraising and marketing events including, but not limited to an annual gala, donor events, acknowledgement events, celebrations, VIP tours, outreach and media events, meetings and presentations.
20% - Manager-on-duty
Serve as day-of coordinator for clients and vendors; ensure high quality experience for clients; recruit, train and supervise student assistants; ensure client compliance with policies and procedures; conduct on-site inspections of facilities pre and post event; follow up with identified issues.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Working knowledge of concepts and principles of effective event planning and production and public relations.
Organizational skills, including skill in effectively coordinating and organizing multiple details. Excellent
organizational abilities appropriate to effectively calendar management and student and / or volunteer scheduling.
Good interpersonal communication skills and political acumen, including skill in effectively representing the campus, medical center or other university organization to its publics.
Good judgment and effective decision-making and problem resolution skills, including skill to recognize and deal effectively and appropriately with real and potential problem areas, including skill to determine the issues / problems that need to be brought to the attention of higher level staff and / or management.
Ability to work in diverse groups, including but not limited to students, staff, faculty, general public, production personnel, technical operators and performing artists.
Proven sales and marketing abilities for an active conference center or other multipurpose facility.
Ability to work professionally under pressure and under tight deadlines ensuring excellent customer service support.
