The Medical Director for Inpatient Psychiatry at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital is responsible for providing and overseeing clinical care on the general adult inpatient psychiatry unit. The Medical Director reports to the Chair of Psychiatry at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital and works with hospital nursing leadership to coordinate and deliver high-quality care according to the Yale-New Haven Health System standards of care. The Medical Director will represent the Psychiatry Department at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for all matters related to inpatient psychiatric care and participate in administrative functions as necessary to fulfill that role. The Medical Director will oversee the work of Advanced Practice Professionals on the unit, participate in department educational functions, and provide supervision and/or support those providing supervision to trainees on the unit. The Medical Director may participate in the planning and execution of projects for the department of psychiatry related to the delivery of inpatient psychiatric care. The Medical Director may represent the Lawrence and Memorial/Westerly Hospital delivery network for matters related to inpatient psychiatric care at meetings or functions of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Service Line of the Yale-New Haven Health System. The Medical Director will perform other duties at the direction and discretion of the Chair of Psychiatry for Lawrence and Memorial Hospital consistent with the mission and needs of the department, the hospital, and the health system. This position includes an academic appointment as Assistant Professor at Yale School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry.
The adult inpatient unit at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital is a 17-bed unit. The Medical Director of the unit would be expected to typically see between 10 and 12 patients daily and will have the support of Advanced Practice Providers, Social Workers, Occupational therapists, nurses, and mental health clinicians in providing care for all patients on the unit. The average daily census on the unit has been around 15.5 patients with an average length of stay of about 8 days. Hospital-based psychiatric services at Lawrence and Memorial also include Psychiatry Emergency Services, Psychiatry Consult/Liaison service, and a multi-track Intensive Outpatient Program that also offers traditional ambulatory services. The Department of Psychiatry also offers outpatient services co-localized with primary care practices at eight sites across the Lawrence and Memorial/Westerly Delivery Network and offers an inpatient older adult psychiatry unit at Westerly Hospital. Four psychiatrists and four advanced practice providers work together to provide well-integrated hospital-based care at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, two additional psychiatrists and two advanced practice providers work primarily in the primary care setting, and a psychiatrist and an advanced practice provider provide care at the Westerly inpatient unit. Several per-diem psychiatrists and advanced practice providers help with call and vacation coverage. Working across levels of care is encouraged when possible for continuity of care, and the Inpatient Medical Director has the opportunity to offer outpatient bridge appointments to recently discharged patients through the ambulatory services at the IOP and keep a small panel of IOP and/or outpatients if desired. Contributing to call coverage for nights (by phone/Electronic Medical Record) and weekends (in-person for rounding, by phone after hours) is expected but paid separately and is not required when other coverage is available.
