Join Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) as a full-time Clinical Research Assistant to support fascinating research associated with examination of the physiology and function of the human circadian timing system and sleep.

ABOUT THIS RESEARCH ASSISTANT ROLE

The Research Assistant will be responsible for day-to-day interactions with research participants: screening, recruiting, consenting and following up with study subjects, administering cognitive tests, as well as collecting samples and data.

The Research Assistant will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator Jamie Zeitzer, Ph.D. - Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. Dr. Zeitzer is a circadian physiologist specializing in the understanding of the impact of light on circadian rhythms and other aspects of non-image forming light perception.

This a full-time position, located in Palo Alto, CA.

Schedule: The Research Assistant will need to be available to work weekends and overnight shifts (2-3 per week) to accommodate circadian timing system and sleep schedules. There will be some flexibility to work from home, but around 80% of the time you will be working onsite at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

• Screen, recruit, and meet with study subjects;
• Explain the study procedures to study subjects;
• Obtain informed consent;
• Answer any study-related questions from the study subjects;
• Provide phone follow-up to subjects;
• Assist with administering computer-based and written cognitive tests;
• Collect data via in-person interviews;
• Set-up and maintain physiologic recording equipment;
• Assist with implementing clinical research studies with an understanding of the protocol;
• Coordinate with PI's wet lab for collection and storage of saliva samples;
• Check data for completeness and follow-up;
• Aid PI in data collection and analysis;
• Occasionally drop materials off with the participants;
• Assist with the collection of biological samples (urine, saliva);
• Aid PI in maintaining records and research compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience;
• Previous experience in a research environment (1- 2 years of related experience desired);
• Flexibility in working hours to accommodate circadian timing system and sleep schedules (i.e., potential to work weekends and overnights to visit patients and collect samples in the lab);
• Good interpersonal skills in order to interact with study subjects;
• Good time-management and prioritization skills;
• Accurate record keeping and attention to detail;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
• Ability to understand scientific literature, experimental procedures and their limitations, and current needs of the research community.

Environmental Conditions: Exposure to office and hospital/clinical environment. Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
