Race and Technology Research Fellow

The Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity (CCSRE) is Stanford University's hub for innovative scholarship on race and ethnicity. Our mission is to advance racial equity through interdisciplinary education, research and community engagement. CCSRE addresses race in all its forms and serves as a resource for scholars, students, and leaders in every part of Stanford and beyond. We play a role as a national leader among our peer institutions, and our many programs advance racial justice in the world through applied research and public scholarship.

About the Technology and Racial Equity Initiative

CCSRE's Technology and Racial Equity Action Initiative links research, teaching, and practice to advance racial justice in the analysis, production, and deployment of new technologies. This includes both understanding the ways that new technologies encode and exacerbate racial inequity, as well as the ways that new technologies might be used to advance racial equity. The Initiative consists of four integrated elements: a research program including (1) a research team at CCSRE and a network of Stanford scholars and visitors who will develop new research and cultivate a network of scholars at Stanford and beyond, (2) practitioner fellowships to integrate research and application of new technologies, (3) student programming and coursework to introduce a diverse body of students to the implications of new technologies on racial equity, and (4) programming and communications work to share new research and practitioner work publicly. Our goal is to revise our very understanding of how technology can combat racial problems, as well as generate new technologies and accountability mechanisms to advance racial equity.

Reporting to the Faculty Director of Research, and in collaboration with the CCSRE Executive Director, the Research Fellow will undertake a variety of research projects connected to the Initiative's strategic priorities. The Fellow will:

• Coordinate the Center's Technology and Racial Equity Graduate Fellowship program in partnership with Center staff and a Faculty Advisory Board. The graduate fellowship includes an interdisciplinary group of 10 graduate students from across Stanford. These fellows workshop research and develop collaborative projects in bi-weekly meetings.
• Produce reports, briefs, and white papers for non-specialist audiences, policymakers, and community leaders, drawing from existing research on key issues at the intersection of race and technology.
• Conduct research that supports and expands the impact of projects led by the Initiative's Race and Technology Practitioner Fellows, building synergies with the research team and network. This may include working with Practitioner Fellows to design and execute collaborative research, as well as conducting parallel research on related issues.
• Conduct independent research on topics related to racial equity and technology that align with the Initiative's strategic priorities.
• Prepare grant proposals to support new research in the Initiative.
• Present research and represent the Center at relevant conferences, and participate in relevant programming at the Center and on campus.

This is a 100% FTE, 11 month fixed term position.

In this role, you will:

• Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.
• Write and edit content for proposals, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities under the general direction of PI. Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support).
• Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.
• Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
• Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. Make recommendations on funding based on program spend.
• May oversee and train student workers.
