Departmental Overview

The Graduate School of Journalism at U.C. Berkeley is widely regarded as one of the top journalism programs in the United States. The School offers a two-year Masters of Journalism degree to an enrollment of about 120 students at a time. All students spend their first semester in an intensive course that teaches accurate, responsible deadline reporting and writing. During their remaining three semesters, students may specialize in print, video, documentary, photojournalism, audio or multimedia. The school's emphasis is on mastering a wide variety of techniques while learning the highest standards of responsible and enterprising journalism. There are 8 permanent faculty members in the School and many working journalists who serve as adjuncts and visiting lecturers. The School employs an average of 25 temporary and career staff members.

Responsibilities

• Assist in administering a range of administrative and HR activities including hiring contractor editors, processing and paying guest and selection committee honorariums, setting up fellows as vendors and getting fellowship award payments processed in a timely manner, onboarding and training student assistants and interns.
• Coordinate and collaborate with School of Journalism staff and ProS Region HR partners as needed.
• Troubleshoot issues with employees, contractors, and fellows and UCPath.
• Assist with organizing incoming applications for fellowships, including responding to inquiries via email, organizing applications in Google Drive folders for Selection Committee to review and communicating about logistics with chosen fellows.
• Reviewing and submitting reimbursements and invoices from contractors, staff, fellows and suppliers.
• Close coordination with School of Journalism procurement and finance staff as well as other campus partners in the areas of business administration.
• Assist with meetings, conferences or other events including all logistics (catering, room rental etc) - as possible given remote nature.

Required Qualifications

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and/or ability to learn administrative, budgetary, financial principles and practices at UC Berkeley and how to navigate those systems in timely and efficient ways.
• Demonstrated skill in managing sensitive and confidential information.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
• Familiarity and comfort with Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets.
• High school diploma or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with updating Wordpress websites.
• Interest in Journalism.

Salary & Benefits

This is a non-exempt temporary position at 12.5% (5 hrs a week). This position is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits with the possibility of extension. Hourly pay is commensurate with experience within the range of $30.07 (Step 8.0) - $32.89 (Step 12.0).
