About Naval Postgraduate School:

Department of Operations Research:

The Department of Operations Research (OR) of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is accepting applications for a Non-Tenure Track position of Research Associate Professor, with a specialized focus on human performance, in Human Systems Integration. Your role will be to assist with all aspects of research, especially research involving data collections in the field. Primary responsibilities will include study design and execution (recruitment, data collection, analysis), and disseminating research findings in peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and oral presentations at various venues (e.g., conferences). You will generate research proposals, and you will provide education and mentorship to students by supporting student research, supervising and evaluating student theses and dissertations, and intermittently teaching subjects offered by the OR department.

The OR Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, is the oldest and one of the largest OR departments in the nation. Our students are primarily military officers seeking Master’s degrees in defense-oriented OR topics. Our students are capable, mature, and hard working. The department has 47 faculty members, with 20 tenure track professors, who do research in defense-related stochastic modeling, data analysis, optimization, simulation, human systems integration, and human performance. Our research addresses important and challenging problems in national security and we foster close collaborations with US Navy and Department of Defense sponsors, as well as other universities. Position Responsibilites:

• Identify viable avenues for sleep and human performance research and develop research proposals within the scope of DoN and DoD goals.
• Draft literature reviews, white papers, and technical reports.
• Assist with all aspects of research study design.
• Collect high-quality data in field and laboratory studies.
• Manage and analyze data using statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, and JMP).
• Communicate research findings primarily via peer-reviewed avenues (e.g., journal publications), and also in technical reports, conference presentations, non-technical reports, and visual mediums (i.e., tables, lists, and figures).
• Provide education and mentorship to students by supporting student research, supervising and evaluating student theses and dissertations, and ocassionally teaching subjects offered by the OR department (off-campus, on-line, or in residence).
• Support student and faculty Institutional Review Board (IRB) package development.
• Provide the Crew Endurance Team and OR department with expertise in sleep, circadian rhythms, human performance, and neuroscience.
• Support the administrative oversight required to manage research studies.
• Provide academic advice, service, or consultation to, first, DoN and DoD activities, and second, the larger community of scholars and others.
• Worldwide travel to research study locations.
• Perform other duties commonly understood to be faculty duties, as required.

Education received in foreign colleges or universities will be considered acceptable based on any of the following. This information must be submitted to the contact identified in the vacancy announcement, within the time limits specified in the vacancy announcement.

1. The specific courses have been accepted for college-level credit by an accredited U.S. college or university because they would be creditable if the student were to further his or her education at that institution.

PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications:

• PhD in human factors, neuroscience, experimental psychology, behavioral sciences, or related disciplines.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience as a faculty member in accredited institutions of higher education
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in human subjects research investigating human performance.
• Demonstrated experience in study design, IRB protocol development, recruitment, enrollment, consent, data collection, and analysis.
• Demonstrated experience writing literature reviews, peer-reviewed scientific papers, and technical reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of research methods and statistical concepts.
• Ability to work independently within the framework of established regulations and guidelines with accuracy, technical soundness, and conformity to policy and procedures.
• Evidence of strong potential for initiative to produce accurate and timely work in a busy, fast-paced environment, in which some of the workload may be cyclical and heavy at times.
• Excellent oral and written communication, which is necessary to successfully coordinate with others and to respond to inquiries from students, faculty, and staff at NPS.
• Fully proficient in Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to learn other applications used by NPS for academic administration and research activities.
• Evidence of the ability to mentor students and junior research team members, and advise student theses and dissertations. Background in higher education with an understanding of the student requirements through graduation.

Conditions of Employment:

• Travel Requirements: 25% or more per year to conduct research lab work and field studies.
• Eligibility to hold a DoD security clearance.
• S. citizenship is required.
