Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Facilities Division is seeking an Electrical System Engineer for its Berkeley campus. You will manage in-building, low voltage (<600V) electrical equipment and distribution by proactively addressing opportunities to improve reliability, and providing troubleshooting focused on critical electrical equipment. You will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team dedicated to achieving our Mission to provide safe and reliable facilities and infrastructure in support of World Class Science.

You will possess technical engineering expertise, problem solving abilities, and value a diverse collaborative work environment. You will conduct risk assessments and reliability studies for electrical equipment, identify gaps, develop project scopes and set the priorities for addressing opportunities to ensure the performance of the facility's electrical systems. This will include oversight of the electrical system elements (e.g., low voltage equipment and wiring, medium voltage equipment and wiring, etc.), electrical system studies (e.g. fault studies, protection and coordination studies, and load flow studies etc.), and electrical safety evaluations (e.g. NFPA 70E evaluations, arc flash studies, etc.).

What You Will Do:

• Acts as primary electrical engineer responsible for the reliability of electrical equipment within a defined region on the LBNL campus.
• Manages equipment Preventive Maintenance Improvement Program, reviews testing and maintenance reports, identifies and elevates issues and concerns, provides recommendations for improving preventive maintenance, optimizes PM frequencies based on findings, and develops PM plans for new equipment.
• Identifies and tracks risks/vulnerabilities by carrying out studies to improve safety, reliability, functionality, and sustainability. Proactively develops projects/solutions to resolve vulnerabilities and mitigate risks. Identifies bad actors and prioritizes improvements to eliminate them.
• Maintains equipment metrics and trends, and communicates KPIs to stakeholders. Leads quarterly meetings with other discipline engineers to review incidents, risks, and opportunities to gain alignment on priorities and strategies.
• Provides day to day support for Electrical Systems and advises contractors and in-house electricians in troubleshooting system malfunctions; conducts equipment failure investigations and root-cause analysis to determine and mitigate common failure modes for critical equipment. Proposes and implements solutions for long term reliability and total cost of ownership.
• Interacts with the CMMS system to track preventive/corrective maintenance work orders, regulatory compliance, and asset history. Provides documented guidance for work orders to maintenance crafts and planners when needed to address complex repairs and restoring of systems.
• Supports turnarounds, planned and unplanned outages, major electrical equipment overhauls, routine and non-routine repairs.
• Documents and maintains up to date record of electrical system configuration. Ensures drawings and panel schedules for the zone are maintained and up to date.
• Reviews Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) permits and conducts Arc Flash calculations as needed.
• As system owner supports new equipment installations and system modifications by providing engineering analysis and evaluation using relevant knowledge of the history and operation of equipment.
• Responsible owner for Electrical Specifications including soliciting and reviewing feedback on issues and recommendations and ensuring periodic updates are completed.

What is Required:

• Requires a minimum of 8 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical equipment and distribution systems with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field; or 6 years of experience and a Master's degree; or equivalent experience.
• Experience with electrical system troubleshooting, testing and preventive maintenance programs, and risk assessments.
• Experience conducting electrical engineering studies of low and medium voltage equipment including power system analysis involving short circuit, voltage drop, power factor, protective device coordination, and Arc Flash analysis by using SKM.
• Experienced in computer based power system modeling with one of the following software packages (SKM, Easy Power, ETAP).
• Demonstrated experience in the application of electrical codes, regulations and standards (i.e. CEC/NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, ANSI/IEEE, NETA MTS, NETA ATS).
• Expert verbal and written communication and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present and advise line management and science program customers.
• Experience working as part of a team in a diverse work environment within all levels of the organization.
• Proven ability to work effectively on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
• Ability to climb ladders and perform site walk-thru, at times around hazardous systems and equipment, to investigate as-built conditions, to inspect construction, equipment, systems, and structures.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical equipment and distribution systems or equivalent professional experience.
• Working knowledge in Schneider Electric Power Monitoring Expert system, Scheneider electric ION meters.
• Working knowledge of protection, control, automation and SCADA in Medium and High Voltages (12.47kV and 115kV) electrical systems.
• Electrical design experience in medium and low voltage power systems.
• Advanced knowledge of electrical construction methods, selection of electrical equipment including medium/low voltage switchgears, and materials for electrical power distribution.
• Working knowledge in AutoCad.
• Strong experience with electrical system troubleshooting, testing and preventive maintenance programs, and risk assessments.
• Strong experience conducting electrical engineering studies of low and medium voltage equipment including power system analysis involving short circuit, voltage drop, power factor, protective device coordination, and Arc Flash analysis by using SKM.
• Strong experience in computer-based power system modeling with one of the following software packages (SKM, Easy Power, ETAP).
• Demonstrated strong experience in the application of electrical codes, regulations and standards (i.e. CEC/NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, ANSI/IEEE, NETA MTS, NETA ATS).
• Registered professional engineer in the State of California,California.

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
