Job Description:

The locksmith position within the Department of Public Safety will be responsible for all aspects of physical keying at Iowa State University. The locksmith will cut keys, pin cylinders, fix/ maintain existing hardware and complete new installations. The locksmith will need to have attention to detail and work either alone or within a small team.The locksmith will also be responsible for building keying plans for construction and remodels.

In addition to Iowa State University's standard background check, candidates are required to successfully complete additional background, thorough reference checks, and pre-employment health evaluation(s) in accordance with the Department of Public Safety's hiring practices.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Installs, adjusts, recombinates, services, and repairs all types of locking mechanisms, strikes, doors, and closers (may include electronic hardware and security systems).

Makes new keys from duplicate pattern keys using automated key cutting machines, and manually from codes.

Maintains a working inventory of all materials and equipment related to the trade requiring a specialized knowledge of application of building codes and safety related hardware.

Maintains files of combinations and codes for both combination and electronic locking devices.

Reads and interprets floor plans, as well as hardware and key schedules.

Participates in development of master key systems and coordinates institutions master key systems with factory systems.

Maintains records and generates reports from computer databases.

Assists in assigning the work and training apprentices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the methods to install, repair, rebuild, rekey and recombinate locks and of safe construction.

Knowledge of the operation and calibration of computerized key machines.

Skill in utilizing computer hardware and software to communicate electronically with customers, to research information, and to access records.

Skill in the use and manipulation of hand and power tools, including those unique to the locksmith trade.

Ability to use manual dexterity and physical coordination.

Ability to prioritize jobs and to respond to emergency situations.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing with staff, students, vendors, and the public.

Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds to move and/or replace doors.

Ability to maintain a system of accurate records and to prepare reports.

Ability to read and understand floor plans and blueprints.
