It's known as an unconventional place where innovation and experimentation is part of the campus's DNA. That playful, bold spirit still thrives today, all on a campus renowned as among the most beautiful in the world. DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Diversity in Development Lab, directed by Dr. Hyesung Grace Hwang, investigates socio-cognitive development starting from infancy. The lab is especially interested in examining how infants and children start to develop biases about people based on race, language, and accent, and how their social environment - their families, schools, neighborhoods, cultures, and more - influence these conceptions. We are also interested in investigating children's emerging conception of politics, equity, and activism. We examine these processes in racially, linguistically, and culturally diverse populations and use a variety of interdisciplinary methods across psychology, neuroscience (e.g., EEG), physiology, and sociology. Please see hghwang.com for more information about my research. This position is ideal for individuals who would like to gain research skills and pursue doctoral or graduate programs in the future. Individuals will have opportunities to be involved in preparing conference presentations, writing journal manuscripts, and starting their own research projects in collaboration with Dr. Hwang and her students. We are dedicated to supporting and mentoring the next generation of scholars from diverse backgrounds. More information can be found here: psychology.ucsc.edu JOB SUMMARY Under supervision from the principal investigator, the incumbent will coordinate and conduct research investigating early social bias development. The research involves laboratory and online experiments, phone interviews, and testing and observation of children in naturalistic environments (preschools or homes). Audio, video, and questionnaire data are collected in these contexts and are subsequently stored, coded, and analyzed. Participant recruitment, mainly through phone, email, and social media, is also part of the activities expected to be performed. The incumbent will also be involved in recruiting, training, and supervising undergraduate research assistants.
