The Department of Recreational Sports offers members of the UC Berkeley community an extraordinary experience to live active and meaningful lives while on campus.

Programs and services range from group fitness, aquatics, adventure trips, drop-in fitness and recreation, intramural sports, sport clubs, personal training, WorkFit, and many other activities. Recreational Sports is enhanced by its indoor and outdoor facilities, including three indoor locations, four pools, five tennis courts, and an outdoor adventure center at the Berkeley Marina.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and/or performs repairs and enhancements to buildings, structures and equipment.
• Prioritizes work requests and schedule work assignments.
• Enforces, reviews, and interprets space planning and allocation assignments for department.
• Works closely with campus staff including Physical Plant staff, PDC project managers and inspectors as well as contractors and trades personnel.
• Coordinates regular inspection of facilities.
• Oversees inventory, maintenance and storage of equipment, tools, supplies, vehicles, etc.
• Maintains equipment and supplies in safe working condition in compliance with industry standards and CAL-OSHA.
• Inspects facilities and reports and/or corrects all unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
• Coordinates repairs and corrections resulting from inspecting agencies such as campus Fire Marshall, campus Environment Health and Safety or CAL-OSHA.
• Provides documentation of corrections.
• Ensures RS adherence to guidelines established by CAL-OSHA and the campus EH&S Department.
• Directly oversees budgets and scheduling issues for assigned projects, ensuring on-budget and on-time performance.
• Establishes/maintains good working relationship with diverse populations including internal departmental units, campus service providers such as Capital Projects, EH&S and Police, and external regulatory agencies such as State Fire Marshall, to coordinate the planning, design, and implementation of facilities, new buildings, and modifications and to ensure sufficient support for project implementation.
• Provides expertise in selection of design professionals, fee and contract negotiations, project code compliance and regulations, engineering and technical support, campus policies and project development.
• Identifies problems and develops solutions, such as allocation of resources or changing project scope.
• Ensures project requirements are defined, building management contract and contract changes are negotiated, operating budgets established and financial terms conditions of contract are identified.
• Develops and maintains facility annual budget in excess of $1.9 million in addition to capital projects of approximately $1.4 million.
• Monitors adherence to maintenance plans and schedules.
• Selects, develops, evaluates, and directly supervises a large maintenance and custodial staff (15 fte) and one administrative assistant with a focus on staff performance and development, team building and communications, resolution of issues and conflicts, review and approval of work.
• Provides technical support for home events and programs such as Caltopia, Special Olympics, and other RSF events.
• Works closely with Events Management component to organize and execute events.

Required Qualifications

• Strong skills to facilitate and collaborate with various internal and external constituencies on long- and short-term facilities planning and management.
• Strong analytical, research and report preparation skills to meet regulatory and budgetary reporting requirements.
• Broad knowledge in the areas of facilities management, space planning and allocation, security, fire and safety and emergency preparedness.
• Strong skills in management, regulatory compliance and operations planning.
• Strong skills in leadership, motivation of staff and team building.
• Strong skills in verbal and written communications.
• Strong skills supervising in a union environment.

Education

• Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

• This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
• This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $62,300.00 - $90,700.00.
