DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions.  The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet.  The department includes operating budgets of over $48 million, manages a capital project portfolio of approximately $500 million, and employs nearly 300 full time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent and the direction of the Lead Irrigation Specialist, the incumbent maintains, inspects, installs, services, designs, modifies, and repairs campus irrigation systems. The work may include repairs on  pressurized main lines (up to 6 inches) made of various materials such as Transite, PVC, galvanized pipe, etc.;  manual systems, laterals and valves, and all aspects of automatic systems, including athletic field, college, and building landscape area irrigation systems. The incumbent investigates, excavates, and corrects  problems such as leaks, broken pipes, improperly connected fittings, damaged materials, low voltage electrical control problems, malfunctioning equipment,  and will adjust controllers, valves, and heads to ensure correct coverage and precipitation rates.  The incumbent will periodically operate and inspect remote control systems and may install new systems including controller wires, pipe, valves and sprinkler heads; and relocate main lines, quick coupler valves and sprinkler heads. The incumbent will conduct and document annual Planned Maintenance for all irrigation systems on campus: Identify major deficiencies, correct minor deficiencies, record findings on work order and hand in paperwork. The incumbent will create material orders for repairs, parts, and material supplies, track and record material usage for individual jobs and restock truck supply, maintain time records and work accounting for many separate accounts.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Maintains Irrigation Systems and Makes Repairs

• Periodically operates and inspects remote control systems.  
• Installs new systems including controller wires, pipe valve and sprinkler heads; relocates main line quick coupler valves and sprinkler heads.

30% - Planned Maintenance Program

• Conducts and documents annual Planned Maintenance for all irrigation systems on campus: Identify major deficiencies, correct minor deficiencies, record findings on work order and hand in paperwork. 

5 % - Repair Materials Stock Maintenance

• Creates material orders for repairs, parts, and material supplies. Tracks and records material usage for individual jobs and restocks truck supply. Maintains time records and work accounting for many separate accounts.

5% - Other Duties as assigned

• May assist with other operations as needed such as but not limited to: Traffic control, roadkill removal, shop cleaning, etc.

5% - Record keeping

• Accurately record time spent on various jobs to matching work orders. Complete time submission to payroll systems. Complete materials billing and planned maintenance record keeping.

5% - Sustainability

• Adheres to UC sustainability policies.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge of older and current irrigation system hardware and materials.
• Experience and knowledge of the design and construction of complete irrigation systems.
• Ability to and experience with diagnosing problems with irrigation systems and developing and implementing repair plans.
• Experience working in a campus setting, with attendant concern toward water conservation, best practices, and coordination with and accommodation of campus activity.
• Experience performing, completing, and documenting an irrigation preventative maintenance program on a large-scale institutional basis.
• Knowledge, ability and experience with mechanical, electrical and plumbing tools, including electronic fault and pipe locators, power pipe threaders, multi-testers, power saws, generators, compressors, etc
• Ability and experience in reading and working from landscape and irrigation blueprints.
• Knowledge of the water requirements of landscape planting and lawns.
• Knowledge of water holding properties of soil types and the concepts of evapotranspiration
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions to effectively communicate and interact with fellow workers, staff, faculty and students
• Ability to keep organized records of time and materials.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge of industry standards regarding backflow devices, pipe requirements, etc. in the installation of new sprinkler systems and the renovation of old systems not conforming to code.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
• Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
• The ability to move materials weighing up to 75 lbs. with or without accommodation.
• Ability to perform essential physical job functions requiring bending, stooping, and performing duties requiring physical agility.
• Ability to dig and manually excavate for irrigation equipment in various soil conditions.
• Ability to work outdoors in and environment that may contain grasses, pollens, dust, or other irritants.
